Bold. Fashionable. Yet, Doesn't Go Out of Style.

Barnevelders are another breed of chicken that played an integral role within our world history. Before the mid 1800s, commercial European chicken breeds predominantly were white egg layers. It wasn't until the breed was created around 1850 in Barneveld, Netherlands, that changed the commercial egg industry through a critical new trait — brown eggs! It was proven that brown eggs have a longer shelf life compared to white eggs since brown egg shells block more light than white ones. History would have it that the Barnevelder would become the new chosen breed for commercial purposes, including meat. By 1923, Barnevelder eggs were extended beyond Europe when they were imported to the United States and Argentina. With this being said, we at Überchic Ranch take pride in breeding Silver Double-Laced Barnevelders in the Standard size, rather the Bantam.

The Silver Barnevelder is an excellent utility bird, is Winter-hardy, has gorgeous double-laced feathers, and is a docile breed that is excellent with children. Roosters are so gentle that some may even help raise fledgling chicks! As a medium-sized dual-purpose bird, roosters can reach 7 to 8 pounds while hens reach 5 to 6 pounds. Bantam roosters are a mere 1.6 pounds. Although the Bantam-sized Barnevelders were bred for novelty, the Standard-size Silver Barnevelders are prolific egg layers of cream-colored eggs. Since 1920, Barnevelders have since been double-laced. These double-laced feathers are now highly prized by fashion designers, especially Silver Double Laced Barnevelders.

Due to new commercial breeds eventually becoming the new standard for "Big Agriculture," Barnevelders in general are now moderately rare throughout the world, where they are found mostly in the Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Portugal. Due to being fairly new to the U.S., if you're looking for a chicken that is rare, makes a great pet, is a great table bird, has absolutely stunning plumage, and / or is easy to raise and maintain, then the Silver Barnevelder is the fashionable choice for you!
